From the moment we saw this magnificent example of Georgian architecture, set within mature, tranquil parklands, we knew we wanted to be involved in its restoration.
This is a prime example of turning abandonment and neglect into beautiful real estate. The conversion of the Grade II listed building into 12 contemporary apartments offers the discerning buyer an unmissable chance to share in a unique living space. The project was not without its challenges.
The building had deteriorated significantly over the years, due to wind, water, decay, fire and vandalism, but the local community was very keen to see the house restored. This was such an ambitious undertaking, many developers simply walked away. However, the inherent beauty of one of the finest homes in the area shone through to us, giving us the encouragement to succeed.
We took every care with Anlaby House Estate to deliver a sympathetic restoration. In consultation with Heritage Council, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, conservationists, local historians and many members of the local community, we worked hard to protect and restore every feature. Our architects carefully studied the original layout and structure to ensure none of the original grandeur of the rooms was compromised, with minimal partitioning and few corridors to keep all living space light and airy. At the same time, we introduced modern conveniences such as en-suite bathrooms, cloakrooms, storage provision and appliances.
Where the damage was at its worst, such as the roof and plasterwork, materials were replaced to ensure the safety, security and longevity of the structure, in keeping with the Grade II listing and conservation requirements. The driveway approach takes the route of the original carriageway, beneath the canopy of a 130-year-old cedar tree and passing through the imposing, listed gateway with its fine stone columns and ornamental gate. Much has been done to rejuvenate the original estate plantings, in addition to the planting of new, mature yews along the driveway, to recreate the sense of grandeur befitting the arrival to a property of this stature.
We drew inspiration from the Georgian features in the design of the new homes whilst protecting the heritage, landscape and unique environment. The introduction of a beautiful Georgian square, courtyard and gatehouse has opened up the estate within the grounds to offer further opportunity to live in this highly sought-after setting.
In Anlaby House Estate, we have created some of the finest, most desirable homes in the region.
